This six (6) month program teaches you the fundamentals of firefighting, from arrival on the scene and size-up, to extinguishment of the fire. Other instruction on use of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, Forcible Entry, Ropes and Knots, Ladders and various techniques of Fire Attack provide the education to certify as a Firefighter Level I and II in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Additional courses in Hazardous Materials: First Responder - Operations Level, MayDay! Firefighter Down! and Vehicle Rescue will also be taught in the academy.
Days of Class: Mondays and Wednesday nights from 1830 - 2200, Saturdays and some Sundays from 0800 - 1700.
Pre-Requisites:
- Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age prior to the first night of class.
- Must be a member of a Virginia-based Fire Department and have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that does not have any damage that would prevent use in a burning structure and is approved by instructors.
- Fit testing for SCBA facepiece will be done on Saturday, August 25 and is mandatory for all students who have not had a fit test in the past 6 months.
