Purpose of Road Names
The Road Naming system in Frederick County is an integral part of the addressing system. Every road in the county that serves at least four residences, inhabitable structures, or businesses are required to have a road name. Having a Uniform Road Name system in place supports many services that are crucial to everyday life, such as 911 Emergency Response service, US Postal Service, parcel delivery services, etc.
Guidelines for Selecting Road Names
- No road name shall be abbreviated and must be spelled out completely.
- No directional names such as North, South, East, or West shall be accepted.
- No road names will be accepted with punctuation.
- No road name will be accepted with the first word of the name being the same as another road name currently in use.
- No road name shall be accepted that is spelled the same or phonetically the same as another road name currently in use.
- Road names shall change at major four-way intersections and/or disjointed segments.
Requesting a Road Name
Any property owner in Frederick County may request a name for a previously unnamed drive that accesses their property. They may also request that a road name be changed or removed.
