About the Board
The Historic Resources Advisory Board (HRAB) was established in 1987 to provide guidance to the Frederick County Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission on development proposals which impact the historic resources of Frederick County. It consists of nine members, including one from each Magisterial District in the County, two "At-Large" members, and a chairman. Also serving on the committee are a Planning Commission liaison and an architectural historian. Our Mission
Over the years, the number of historic properties in Frederick County has declined as natural elements contribute to their degradation and as population and development demands increase. It is the goal of the County to complement this development with the protection and preservation of the remaining historical properties and structures through the implementation of various strategies as outlined fully in the link below.
Board Strategies
- Maintain the inventory of historic sites and potential districts and promote the official designation of significant resources in the County.
- Study and adopt methods to preserve historic resources.
- Develop a comprehensive approach to historic preservation which will result in a system of sites and battlefields dedicated or protected in a coordinated fashion.
- Incorporate historic resources in efforts to promote tourism.
- Develop a funding mechanism to allow Frederick County to purchase and maintain historically significant properties and to assist current organizations already engaged in preservation.
- Recognize historic resources and the importance of protecting those resources from the negative impacts of development in long range planning efforts of the County.
- Develop a comprehensive approach to Battlefield protection and preservation.
