Home MenuUsed Medications
Remember, flushing or washing expired medications down the drain is never a good option. This fouls our water supply and harms aquatic habitats. Here are other safe guidelines for the disposal of unused or expired medications which protect not only the environment, but your family's safety.
Free disposal of used medications is offered by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office and the Winchester Police Department. Drop boxes are located in front of the county's Public Safety Building on Coverstone Drive, in front of the Timbrook Public Safety Center on Piccadilly Street in the City of Winchester and in the lobby of the Joint Judicial Center on North Kent Street in the City of Winchester. Special collection days are held throughout the year.
Request DisposalRx at your pharmacy. The powdered material will convert your prescription into an unusable gel which is safe for disposal in your regular household trash.
Other options include:
- Place pills/capsules into a sturdy, resealable baggie. Add small amount of water and baking soda to help dissolve the drugs. Seal. Dispose with trash.
- Add kitty litter or coffee grounds to make medications unappealing. Seal in baggie. Dispose with trash.
- Pour liquid medications directly into resealable baggie. Add kitty litter. Seal. Dispose with trash.
