Frederick County, Va-The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office will provide a free basic firearms safety course to residents of Frederick County, and Winchester City. The 2-hour course will cover basic operation of firearms; dismantling, cleaning, and reassembling of firearms; and federal and state laws pertaining to firearms. The firearms instructors are certified through Virginia’s Department of Criminal Justice Services, so the class will meet the requirements of Virginia Code §18.2-308.02(B) for obtaining a concealed handgun permit.
Community Policing Act Data Collection
Effective July 1, 2020, the Virginia Department of State Police, Uniform Crime Reporting Unit began the collection of investigatory stop data based on the creation of the Community Policing Act.
During this challenging time, the Frederick County Sheriff's Office is committed to providing continuous service to the public. We also are working to ensure the safety of community members and our staff by limiting any unnecessary exposure.

The Citizen Police Academy is designed to give citizens an overview of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. Graduates of this course will have a better understanding of the operation of the Sheriff’s Office, and a greater awareness and appreciation of the daily challenges faced by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. The Frederick County Sheriffs Office D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program began in the fall of 1988, in seven elementary schools in Frederick County, with one Deputy teaching a 17-week Curriculum in the fifth grade classrooms. Learn More!
The School Resource Officer and Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) programs allow deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office to work in Frederick County Public Schools. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office has had a partnership with the Frederick County Public Schools to provide the D.A.R.E. program since 1986 and the school resource officer program since 1998. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office has developed this program to coordinate law enforcement, and other professionals in the community, who specialize in meeting the needs of seniors through planning, education, communication, cooperative strategies, and supportive services.
