The Citizen Police Academy is designed to give citizens an overview of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. Graduates of this course will have a better understanding of the operation of the Sheriff’s Office, and a greater awareness and appreciation of the daily challenges faced by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
The Citizen Police Academy is a 10-week program that meets one evening each week (Monday from 6:00-9:00 p.m.) at the Frederick County Public Safety building. The training consists of classroom and hands-on instruction. The academy is normally held in September, and students graduate in November; however, due to COVID-19 restrictions a 2020 date for the Academy will be determined at a later date.
Topics covered during the academy will include virtually every aspect of police work including:
- Patrol Operations
- Criminal Investigations and Crime Scenes
- Use of Force/Weapons
- Community Policing
- Gang and Narcotic Investigations
- Special Units (SWAT Team, Search & Rescue Team, Dive Team, Crisis Negation Team)
In addition, participants will be given the opportunity to become familiar with a variety of law enforcement equipment and they are encouraged to complete a ride-a-long with a deputy.
The Citizens Police Academy is open to all individuals who live in the Frederick County area. Due to the popularity of this class, we ask that participants attend at least eight (8) of the ten (10) scheduled classes.
Persons interested in attending may contact Captain Aleck Beeman at (540) 662-6168. An application will need to be submitted, which can be found HERE.
